Project Management Professional certification, usually called PMP, is a credential issued by PMI. It is for applicants with time leading projects. You must meet an schooling and past work route, document eligible training, apply and pass PMI's exam. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.

What PMP certification is

PMP certifies project knowledge and experience under the Project Management Institute's rules. It isn't the certificate from a short training course. A provider may teach PMP preparation, but only PMI awards PMP. Use the exact issuer and award when comparing courses or describing your credentials.

Project work may use predictive, agile or mixed methods. Predictive work plans much of the delivery in advance. Agile work uses feedback in short cycles. A mixed approach combines methods. PMP is broader than one software tool or a single method.

Some roles value the award. Not all project jobs require it. Check the actual work you want.

A project coordinator, a senior delivery lead and a technical project manager may face different hiring requirements. You still need to know the field. You also need clear proof of your work.

Use the project credential comparison if you're deciding between PMP, CAPM and a course certificate. It gives each award a distinct purpose. If you're still choosing an occupation, the short training comparison provides a wider view.

Who can apply and who should consider CAPM

PMI's current outline sets experience by qualification. You must have led projects in a professional setting. It must fall within the ten years before you apply. The months must not overlap.

Secondary qualification
At least 60 months of project leadership.
Recognised associate-level or mapped equivalent
At least 48 months.
Bachelor's degree or mapped equivalent
At least 36 months.
GAC-accredited bachelor's/postgraduate degree
At least 24 months.
Training
35 hours of eligible project training, with an active CAPM credit route.

An experienced worker should inspect the project record, not assume all years at work count. A recurring daily duty isn't automatically a project. Equally, a person may have led real projects without holding a project manager title. The relevant question is what they led and can document.

Our requirements guide explains the evidence to gather. It includes worked examples without deciding anyone's eligibility. Use it before paying for a course labelled "PMP certification."

If you don't yet have the past project work, compare PMI CAPM. CAPM has no past project work requirement. It still requires the stated education and a separate exam. A beginner skills course may help you learn before deciding on an external credential.

The application and exam route

Start by matching your schooling and past work to the current requirements. Keep a short project record with the purpose, dates and leadership you performed. Save the supporting education and training details. Submit facts you can support, rather than words borrowed from a sample application.

PMI reviews the form. It may select it for audit. Follow the exact instructions for any requested evidence. Application review is separate from course completion. Don't pay a seller to treat an unclear history as confirmed eligibility.

After acceptance, follow PMI's payment and scheduling route. The test appointment is a separate booking. Check name, identification and delivery requirements before choosing a slot. If you use online testing, inspect the testing provider's room and equipment rules before exam day.

Use the active exam version

PMI launched the revised PMP exam in July 2026. The current outline has three domains: People, Process and Business Environment. The published weights are 33%, 41% and 26% respectively. The exam has 180 questions and a four-hour time allowance.

Don't choose preparation by an old book edition alone. Check whether the course maps to the active outline and covers the current emphasis. A resource can teach sound ideas while using old weights or missing new tasks. That makes it supplementary learning, not a complete current-exam plan.

The original practice questions on this site let you work through decisions and explanations. They aren't official exam questions or a validated simulation. Use them to find study gaps, rather than predict a pass from a small set.

Turn the outline into useful study tasks

Use the outline as a map of decisions you need to explain. It is easy to recognise a term on a flash card and still miss the point of a case. For each task, write what you would check first, who should be involved and what would change your choice.

  • People: take a team disagreement. Separate the facts from each person's view. Explain how you would hear both sides and reach a clear agreement. Then name the record or action that would stop the same gap from returning.
  • Process: take a small project plan. Link the result to scope, tasks and resources. Change one supplier date and explain which other parts of the plan need review. A date change can affect more than the next task on a list.
  • Business setting: take a changed organisational rule. Find the effect on the project and the person with authority to decide. Explain why the old plan cannot simply override the new rule. Keep the proposed response tied to the actual impact.

You can use a blank case without private work records. State your assumptions, then test them by changing a fact. If your answer stays the same despite a major change, check whether you are applying a memorised slogan instead of reading the case.

This work also helps you choose teaching. If you can't explain a basic step, you may need a lesson. If you understand it but misread the case, you may need slower practice and review. Buy for that gap rather than for the largest question count.

Prepare the practical parts too

Read the appointment rules while there is still time to resolve a problem. Check how to ask for an accommodation if you need one. Use the current official route, rather than assuming a practice site can arrange it.

Keep your study and booking decisions separate. A course ending on Friday doesn't prove you're ready to sit the exam on Saturday. Review your understanding across the outline and leave time for any weak area. The right amount of preparation depends on what you already know.

Exam and preparation cost components

A complete budget includes the exam, eligible training if needed, and any materials you choose. Membership, retakes and renewal have their own roles. A course fee is only one part of the PMP route.

PMI publishes a US PMP exam fee of $405 for members and $655 for non-members. Training, materials and membership dues are separate. Source: PMI PMP fees. Checked November 2026.

The PMP cost guide separates required, optional and recurring amounts. It also shows how to compare membership scenarios without assuming a discount saves money overall. Use the worksheet preview there to identify which amounts still need checking.

Consider time as a constraint alongside cash cost. Required training hours aren't your whole study plan. Reading, practice, revision and the application take time too. Record those tasks without turning them into an invented universal completion date.

Choose preparation after checking eligibility

Choose preparation to close your actual gap. You may need qualifying training, current-exam study or practice applying concepts. Those aren't the same purchase. A question bank alone doesn't meet the formal training rule in PMI's current outline.

Read the training comparison after checking your route. It covers PMI's official preparation and two third-party options, with their limits. ExpertRating is preparation only. Its course completion certificate isn't PMP and cannot replace the past project work requirement.

For any provider, check the syllabus against the current outline. Confirm the delivery format, access period and proof that you finished. If the course claims accepted hours, ask for the specific basis and keep the record. Don't rely on a professional-sounding product name.

PMI has also announced a change to live-training eligibility from December 1, 2026. Eligible live courses then must come from an ATP, China REP or eligible accredited academic programme. Self-paced courses have a different route, and earlier completed training remains subject to the current rules.

Renewal and continuing development

PMP isn't a permanent award with no maintenance. PMI requires 60 professional development units, or PDUs, in each three-year cycle, plus its renewal fee. A PDU is a unit of continuing development under PMI's rules. Record eligible learning and activities in the required categories.

Training used to enter the profession and development used to maintain a credential serve different purposes. Don't confuse a seller's reference to PDUs with proof of an entry requirement. Follow the issuer's current wording and save the relevant record of studys.

Build renewal into the plan when deciding whether the credential fits your work. That means time for continuing learning and the fee, not a forecast of higher earnings. If your career direction changes, review whether maintaining the credential still serves that direction.

More in this guide

Use CAPM when an entry credential is the better match. Return to the project management comparison if you need to choose the award before a course.

Can I call myself PMP after a training course?

No. PMI awards PMP through its own process. A provider course certificate isn't that award.

Does experience outside a project manager title count?

The work and evidence matter. PMI requires project leadership in a professional setting, within its current time window. A title alone doesn't settle it.

Is this a short route to a higher salary?

PMP requires past experience and further work. Choose it for a role-relevant need and a route you can document.
