PMP Certification Requirements: Experience and Education Routes
Fight For 50 · Facts checked November 2026
PMP certification requirements combine education, project leadership and training. PMI sets these rules. Its full name is the Project Management Institute. Check the route that matches your actual qualification before you buy preparation. A course alone cannot make up missing past project work. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.
Check the current PMI eligibility routes
PMI's July 2026 outline lists four routes. All require experience leading projects in a professional setting within the past ten years. Count non-overlapping months. Your award must meet the stated level. A similar course title isn't enough.
- Secondary school
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent: at least 60 months of project leadership.
- Associate-level route
- A recognised associate-level or equivalent mapped technical/vocational award: at least 48 months.
- Bachelor-level route
- A recognised bachelor's degree or higher, or a formally mapped equivalent: at least 36 months.
- GAC degree route
- A bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center accredited programme: at least 24 months.
- Training
- At least 35 hours of eligible project training, or the active CAPM credit route.

These are issuer rules, not an automatic eligibility result. A nondegree award needs the formal level mapping PMI describes. Words such as "advanced" or "professional" in its title don't establish that mapping. Keep the education record that supports the route you select.
Education and project experience
Begin with your qualification. Record the awarding body, programme and completion date. If you use an equivalence route, find the official framework record or evidence PMI accepts. Don't choose a shorter experience route just because a training seller says its award is degree-level.
Then list the projects you led. Use dates, the project goal, your role and your actual responsibilities. A project is temporary work that creates a result or change. Routine operations aren't automatically projects. An ongoing service desk and a defined service-desk rollout, for example, describe different types of work.
When projects overlap, don't count the same calendar month twice. A busy month on several projects is still one month of elapsed experience. Keep your records clear enough to show how the months add up. This page doesn't decide whether an individual project is accepted.
PMI's outline says the work need not always be paid, but it must take place in a professional setting. School projects, personal events and home improvement don't qualify. Describe what you really led. Don't turn participation into leadership or a classroom task into professional work.
The PMP guide explains how this check fits into the whole credential route. If the experience isn't there yet, use the entry-credential comparison linked from that guide. Paying for an exam-prep course won't change your work history.
Formal training and acceptable documentation
The current outline requires at least 35 hours of project training aligned with its content. Self-paced training needs an end-of-course assessment. Books and practice tests alone don't meet that training rule. Keep the provider, syllabus, hours and proof of completion.
Training hours for entry aren't the same as the professional development units used to renew an existing credential. A provider may use these terms loosely. Ask which requirement its record of study supports. ExpertRating's own award or a claim about PDUs doesn't establish PMP eligibility.
An active PMI CAPM holder can use the training-credit route. That credit doesn't waive the education level or past project work requirement. A GAC programme's coursework may also support the required hours. Record the basis instead of buying a second course without checking.
PMI has announced a further live-training rule effective December 1, 2026. From that date, eligible live classes must come through an ATP, China REP or eligible accredited academic programme. Self-paced courses remain a separate route. Training completed before the change remains eligible under the current rules, subject to those rules.

Application and audit checklist
Gather the records before starting the application. They should describe a consistent route, rather than a set of course receipts with no link to the required experience.
- Record your qualification and the issuer that awarded it.
- List each project with its start/end dates and purpose.
- Describe the leadership you actually performed.
- Check overlapping months and the ten-year window.
- Keep a suitable verifier for each experience record.
- Save training details and the proof that you finished.
- Read PMI's current application and audit instructions before submitting.
If selected for audit, use the documents PMI requests. Don't invent a job title, alter dates or submit a guessed record to avoid a delay. When a fact is unclear, resolve it from your records or with PMI before treating the application as ready.
Use the same name and details across your account and the required identity records. Check the testing provider's rules when scheduling. An accepted application and a booked exam are separate stages. Save the acceptance and appointment details rather than relying on a course provider's confirmation.
Illustrative applicant situations
A degree holder with routine duties: an office worker holds a bachelor's degree and has worked for several years. Most work is recurring scheduling and reporting. Those years don't automatically become project leadership. The useful next task is to identify any real projects and the role held in each.
A vocational graduate with project work: another sample reader has a technical award and led defined installations. They must check the official qualification level, project scope and non-overlapping months. The word "technical" doesn't by itself select the 48-month route.
An active CAPM holder: a third sample reader already has CAPM. They may use the training credit, but still need the required education level and project leadership. Holding CAPM doesn't turn PMP into a direct upgrade without an application.
These examples show how to inspect evidence. They aren't eligibility verdicts. PMI decides applications under its current rules. Avoid using a short online quiz as a substitute for that review.
What to do next
If your records support a route, return to the PMP certification guide to plan application, preparation and the exam. Check the current outline before choosing materials. Keep the exam date separate from the date you hope to finish a course.
If a requirement is missing, name it clearly: education evidence, project leadership, eligible training or an unclear record. Work on that gap. Don't solve a missing work requirement by collecting more course certificates.
Does my job title have to be project manager?
PMI asks for the actual project leadership, not just a title. Describe the work and preserve evidence of your role.
Can I count two projects in the same month twice?
No. The published requirement uses non-overlapping experience. Track calendar months clearly.
Does a provider certificate prove my training is accepted?
Not by itself. The course and its records must meet the current PMI rule. Check syllabus, hours, assessment and delivery mode.
