Project management certification can mean a PMI professional credential or a course certificate. Start with your project experience. PMP serves experienced applicants; CAPM is the entry credential. Google's course teaches skills and awards its own certificate. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.

The short answer

Choose the award first, then buy the learning you need. A course may teach good skills without awarding the credential in a job listing. Passing a provider's final quiz is different from passing a separate PMI exam. None of these routes grants a job or replaces an employer's hiring requirements.

If you've led projects, check the PMP route. If you're entering project work, compare CAPM with a skills course. If you're unsure what the work involves, try a small planning task before paying for exam preparation.

These are choices for different starting points. The order doesn't rank course quality or predict earnings. We compared the issuers' award, entry, study and assessment rules. We haven't taken these courses or tested their graduates.

1. PMI PMP for eligible experienced applicants

The Project Management Institute issues the Project Management Professional, or PMP. PMI sets the rules for this award. You apply, then take its exam. A PMP course doesn't grant PMP status.

Your school or degree route matters. A secondary school graduate needs more project experience than a graduate of a PMI Global Accreditation Center degree programme. A trade school award has its own rule. Check which route fits your award. A course label isn't enough.

Think in project terms when you review your work history. A project makes a change or has a clear result. Running the same daily service isn't automatically a project.

You may have led a system rollout, office move or service change without holding a project manager title. State what you did. Keep records of your role and dates.

PMP fits when experience is already present and a target role values the credential. It fits less well if you need to learn the terms. You may first need to show that you can plan a small task. Read the PMP guide before choosing preparation. It separates the application, exam and training decisions.

2. PMI CAPM entry credential

The Certified Associate in Project Management, or CAPM, is also issued by PMI. It tests project knowledge. You don't need PMP's years of project leadership. It is a professional award. A course certificate is a different award.

CAPM covers more than a list of definitions. Its scope includes project fundamentals, predictive planning, agile methods and business analysis. Predictive work uses a plan made before the work starts. Agile work uses short cycles and feedback. Business analysis helps define a need and what a useful result looks like.

Choose this route if a project coordinator or support role asks for PMI knowledge and you can fund the exam as well as learning. Check actual job descriptions in your area. An award can help with some roles. It won't be required for all of them.

The CAPM guide explains the application and preparation sequence. Start there if you want the external exam. A short course can be part of your learning, but keep evidence that it meets the education requirement. Don't assume that the word "certification" in a course name proves this.

First choose the award that serves the work you want. Then choose teaching for what you need to learn. This prevents buying a broad course when the gap is exam practice, or an exam product when the basics are still new. Keep those two decisions separate in your plan.

3. Google Project Management course certificate

Google develops this course programme, which is delivered through Coursera. The award is Google's course certificate. It is distinct from PMI PMP and CAPM, even though the programme includes project education relevant to a later PMI route.

External certification
Any CAPM or PMP application and exam is separate. PMP experience still applies.
Main limit
Finishing assignments isn't evidence of paid project leadership.

This is the most direct learning choice of the three if you need a guided start. It covers project planning, budgets, risks, teamwork and agile practice. Use the tasks to explain your choices. Don't just fill each form once.

For example, write why a project task depends on another task. Explain who approves a scope change and what happens if a supplier is late. These notes make your work sample more useful than a completion badge alone. Keep personal and employer data out of public samples.

Read the Google certificate review for curriculum, study and cost detail. It also explains what the course does and doesn't award. That matters if you intend to take a PMI exam later.

Factors to consider for your current experience

Start with the work you want to do. Project support, project management and process improvement overlap, but they aren't the same task. A role that asks you to track meetings and actions may suit a beginner. A role that owns a complex delivery may need industry experience as well as a credential.

Use three questions to narrow the choice:

  • What proof do I already have? List real projects, decisions and results you can discuss.
  • What does the role ask for? Separate a required credential from a preferred one.
  • Name the gap. Choose teaching, practice or an exam to address that gap.

Budget the full route. A course fee doesn't include an external exam unless its terms say so. A membership discount isn't the same as a lower total after membership costs. Ask for any missing required fees before deciding what you can afford.

Check the exam version before buying a question bank. PMI launched a revised PMP exam in July 2026. The new outline uses People, Process and Business Environment domains with new weights.

Old material may still explain sound concepts while missing the current test emphasis. The PMI exam update also lists a live-training rule change effective December 1, 2026. Checked November 2026.

Compare preparation and education courses

Questions about project credentials

Can I earn PMP without project experience?

No. Training cannot replace PMI's project leadership requirement. CAPM has no project experience requirement, though it still has education and exam conditions.

Is a Google certificate the same as CAPM?

No. Google awards course completion. PMI awards CAPM after its own requirements and exam. Keep each award under its real name on an application.

Which choice should I make first?

Pick the target role and check its requirements. Use PMP if you can document the required experience, CAPM for an entry PMI credential, or a course when the immediate need is learning and practice.
