ASQ Six Sigma Certification: Belts, Requirements and Exam Route in 2026
Fight For 50 · Facts checked November 2026
ASQ Six Sigma certification means an award issued by ASQ under its own rules. It is different from taking a Six Sigma course with another provider. Choose the belt that fits your evidence and intended work, then plan the application and preparation around that credential. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.
ASQ Yellow Belt has no education or experience prerequisite. Green Belt requires three years of relevant full-time paid work, with no education waiver. Black Belt has experience-and-project or two-project routes. Each award has its own exam and body of knowledge. A course completion certificate does not satisfy these conditions by itself.
The short answer
ASQ's three principal Six Sigma belt credentials are Certified Six Sigma Yellow Belt (CSSYB), Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB) and Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB). They differ in scope, entry evidence and exam. Black Belt also has a renewal cycle; Yellow and Green are lifetime certifications under ASQ's current policy.
Use the exact award name when an employer or project sponsor specifies ASQ. A training company can teach the same general method without issuing any of those awards. Admission to a course and acceptance of an ASQ exam application are separate decisions.
The facts below come from ASQ's current credential and recertification pages, Checked November 2026.
Programme verdict and official next step
ASQ is a route to consider when the exact ASQ credential fits your work or an employer's stated requirement. Its limitation for a beginner is entry rules: Green Belt's relevant-work requirement cannot be bought away with a short course. Black Belt's project evidence also needs real work behind it.
View at ASQ. Select the exact credential, read its body of knowledge and compare your evidence with its requirements before buying preparation.
A beginner seeking vocabulary and team participation may start by studying the Yellow Belt scope. An experienced applicant considering Green Belt should check duties and dates. Someone considering Black Belt should examine the project-affidavit route before setting an exam date. These are starting checks, not entry rules verdicts for a personal.
ASQ belt options and the official credential
Yellow Belt covers foundational Six Sigma knowledge and a smaller contribution to improvement work. Green Belt covers more involved analysis and project participation. Black Belt covers broader analytical and leadership demands. The current body of knowledge defines the assessment for each, instead of the colour alone.
| Award | Entry evidence | Computer exam | Renewal |
|---|---|---|---|
| CSSYB | No education or experience requirement | 90 questions; 80 scored | No recertification requirement |
| CSSGB | Three years of relevant full-time paid work; no education waiver | 110 questions; 100 scored | No recertification requirement |
| CSSBB | Relevant experience plus project affidavit, or two completed projects with affidavits | 165 questions; 150 scored | Three-year recertification cycle |

A lifetime credential is not a statement that you never need more learning. It describes ASQ's current renewal rule for that award. Your work may still require current methods, software knowledge and sector-specific skills.
Eligibility by belt
Yellow Belt: an introductory certification route
ASQ states that CSSYB has no education or experience rules. That can make the route accessible to someone new to the method. You still need to study the current body of knowledge and pass ASQ's exam. No prerequisite does not mean no assessment.
Read the scope before deciding whether the credential serves your purpose. If your goal is to contribute to a team, foundational learning may fit. If a position specifically asks for Green or Black Belt, do not silently replace Yellow Belt and imply the rules are equivalent.

Green Belt: relevant paid work matters
ASQ requires three years of on-the-job experience in one or more CSSGB body-of-knowledge areas. It says candidates must have worked in a full-time paid role and that educational waivers are not granted for this exam. A degree does not reduce the requirement under that published rule.
Compare your duties with the current body of knowledge. Years in an unrelated position should not be counted solely because you were employed. A job title can also understate relevant work. So describe actual responsibilities honestly instead of deciding from the title alone.

Black Belt: check the project route
ASQ's CSSBB page states three years of relevant on-the-job experience and one completed project with a signed affidavit, or two completed projects with signed affidavits. Read ASQ's linked project rules for the precise evidence and sign-off. A practice exercise is not by itself a completed qualifying project.
Before buying training, check whether you can document the route you intend to use. Identify the actual project, your involvement and the person able to provide the required verification. Do not invent a project outcome or ask someone to sign for work you did not do.

Two illustrative applicant situations
A new administrator has studied DMAIC but has not worked in relevant process areas. A short course can provide learning. But it does not create ASQ Green Belt experience. That person can compare introductory study and the Yellow Belt route while building real work experience.
An experienced quality worker has relevant duties but has not assembled their dates or project evidence. The next action is to organise those records against the chosen credential's rules. Buying a more advanced course does not resolve an undocumented application route.
Application, exams and fee components
ASQ's credential pages link to the application process and testing windows. The general sequence is to choose the credential, submit an application, respond to any details request, receive instructions on entry rules and schedule the exam. A course provider's registration does not reserve an ASQ appointment.
Keep the name on your application consistent with the identification ASQ requires. Read the current testing instructions for the delivery method you choose. Rules for references, calculators and appointment changes are part of exam preparation, not small details to leave until test day.
Dated examination fees
| Credential | Published initial fee | What to check separately |
|---|---|---|
| CSSYB | $434 | Member savings, preparation and any retake |
| CSSGB | $483 | Member savings, preparation and any retake |
| CSSBB | $585 | Member savings, preparation, retake and renewal |

Sources: the Yellow, Green and Black credential pages. Each page lists ASQ member savings on the initial fee. Membership itself is a separate choice and cost. Do not subtract a member saving without checking what getting membership costs.
These amounts are exam fees, not complete training budgets. Books, courses, travel and any required software can add cost. Retakes and appointment changes have their own conditions. If you have not read a required charge, leave the total incomplete instead of calling the exam fee the full cost.
Understand the exam arrangement
ASQ's pages state that the exams are open book, with rules for bound references and permitted calculators. Open book does not mean unlimited time or unrestricted material. Learn how to use your references efficiently under the actual rules.
For the computer-delivered route, CSSYB's stated exam time is two hours and eighteen minutes. CSSGB and CSSBB state four hours and eighteen minutes. Appointment time and exam time are different fields. Read the current page for the route you schedule, Checked November 2026.
Do not infer the pass result from a practice score or a count of familiar questions. ASQ owns its exam scoring and award decision. Practice is a way to name gaps, not proof that you will pass.
Preparation and current body of knowledge
Begin with the body of knowledge linked from the exact credential page. It lists topics and the level at which they may be assessed. That makes it a better preparation map than a generic promise to cover Six Sigma.
Make a study list with three fields: the topic, your existing evidence or knowledge, and the practice you need. For example, you may know how to make a process map but need work on interpreting a statistical result. Keep those gaps separate instead of rating yourself ready from one familiar subject.
Evaluate a preparation course
Ask which credential and body-of-knowledge version the course addresses. Check whether its materials and examples match the current exam scope. A course title containing ASQ or Green Belt does not by itself prove current alignment.
Compare delivery with your schedule. Instructor-led work may offer a fixed pace and questions during class. Self-paced material can be easier to fit around work. But you need a plan for feedback and practice. Neither format removes entry rules.
Check what is included in the purchase. Course access, question banks and exam registration are separate items unless the provider expressly bundles them. A certificate of course completion is still a course award unless the professional issuer has awarded its credential.
Use examples honestly
You can practise with sample process data to learn a technique. Label it as practice. Do not present the exercise as a real employer project or invent savings to make it sound more impressive.
If you have access to a real process, follow the workplace's permission and data rules. Keep confidential records out of personal study files. For a credential requiring project evidence, read the issuer's rules about acceptable projects and verification before assuming that the work qualifies.
Prepare for application and exam as separate tasks
A complete study plan should not hide an incomplete application. Put education or work records, project evidence and exam preparation on separate lines. You may be strong in one area and still have work to do in another.
Also leave time for the issuer's application process and available appointments. A course's final lesson date does not show your exam date. Plan from the current official schedule instead of promising yourself a credential by a marketing deadline.
Keep the issuer's acceptance separate
After organising your evidence, use ASQ's application process for the decision. A course instructor can discuss the subject without being the person who accepts an exam application. Do not treat an informal opinion as approval or a registration receipt as a passed exam.
Keep copies of the documents the issuer requests and the status it actually reports. If more details are needed, address that request before assuming the route is complete. The same discipline applies after testing: use the award and status ASQ has issued, with the right acronym and any continuing obligation.
This separates three useful milestones: preparation completed, application accepted and credential awarded. They can occur at different times. Describing each accurately avoids turning a training purchase into a credential claim that the evidence does not support.
Compare two possible starting points
An applicant has studied the method but has not worked in the areas ASQ names for Green Belt. Their study can still be useful. The missing item is relevant paid work. So the next decision is whether an introductory award or further learning serves the current purpose. Another exam-prep purchase does not turn that study into employment history.
A different sample applicant has relevant work and wants to sit the exam. That person should compare the current outline with what they can explain and apply. Their gap might be one area of analysis instead of the whole subject. A focused preparation choice can then be judged by the practice it provides.
For Black Belt, a third situation is possible: an applicant knows the tools but cannot document the stated project route. That is an evidence problem to resolve before assuming an exam date. A course can teach project methods without giving a signed record of qualifying work.
These cases show why a belt comparison needs more than a price column. Experience, project evidence and study are different inputs. Put each on its own line and use the issuer's actual rules for it. The examples do not decide anyone's eligibility or suggest that completing one activity by itself satisfies the others.
Keep the full award name with the resulting plan. It prevents a Yellow Belt learning choice from being described as Green Belt eligibility, and keeps Black Belt project conditions from being applied to the wrong award.
Renewal and alternatives
ASQ lists Yellow and Green Belt as lifetime certifications with no recertification requirement. Black Belt is on a three-year cycle. ASQ's current recertification page describes journal and exam routes, including the rules for maintaining the credential. Source: ASQ recertification, Checked November 2026.
For Black Belt, ongoing education and records belong in the long-term plan. Do not compare its initial exam fee with another provider's lifetime award as though the continuing obligations are identical. A lower recurring cost also does not prove equal assessment or acceptance.
The certification provider comparison separates ASQ from Council and ExpertRating awards. ExpertRating is an introductory learning option with its own certificate. It does not issue ASQ CSSYB, CSSGB or CSSBB.
For teaching formats and practice, see the training comparison. For the method itself, return to the Six Sigma guide. Choose another provider only after checking which exact award you need and what evidence that provider assesses.
Questions about ASQ certification
Must I earn Yellow Belt before Green Belt?
ASQ's published Green Belt requirement is relevant paid work, not possession of its Yellow Belt credential. Read the current CSSGB page for the complete route. Introductory learning can still be useful if you lack the foundation. But a useful learning step is different from a mandatory prerequisite.
Can a degree replace the Green Belt experience requirement?
ASQ states that educational waivers are not granted for CSSGB. A degree and a preparation course so do not reduce the published three-year relevant-work requirement. Compare your duties and dates with the current issuer wording before paying for an exam-focused route.
Does taking ASQ training award certification?
Training and certification are separate. A course can prepare you and may issue a completion record. The professional credential requires ASQ's application and exam conditions, with experience or project evidence where applicable. Check the exact package before assuming an exam fee is included.
Do all ASQ belts need renewal?
No. ASQ currently lists Yellow and Green Belt as lifetime awards without recertification. Black Belt has a three-year cycle. Use the exact credential's current policy. ASQ Six Sigma certification should always be described by its full award and issuer, with its own continuing conditions.
