Fight For 50 · Facts checked November 2026
Six Sigma training can introduce a method, prepare you for an external exam or develop skills through a project. Those are different purchases. Start with your purpose, then compare the syllabus, practice and award instead of choosing from a belt name alone. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.
The short answer
ASQ training is a route to check when preparing for a named ASQ credential. 6Sigma.us offers several teaching formats and describes its own training and project awards. ExpertRating provides a first course with its own certificate, not ASQ certification.
Before paying, name the gap the training should close. You may need basic vocabulary, more practice in analysis or feedback on a live project. A course can fit one of those needs without fulfilling every professional certification requirement.
The comparison uses current official pages, Checked November 2026. The order reflects three distinct learning needs, not a measured ranking of teaching quality or employer acceptance.
Our top 3 picks
1. ASQ training: check the named credential and current preparation syllabus.
2. 6Sigma.us: compare delivery and the exact project-assessment arrangement.
3. ExpertRating: a first course with an ExpertRating-issued certificate.
| Field | ASQ training | 6Sigma.us | ExpertRating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Belt and syllabus | Choose the exact belt preparation listing | Choose exact Lean Six Sigma level and format | Green Belt-labelled DMAIC introduction |
| Delivery | Catalogue includes classroom, virtual and self-paced options | Classroom, live virtual and self-paced options listed | Self-paced online courseware |
| Practice | Verify within selected listing | Exercises and software work described | Examples, review material and provider exam |
| Project mentoring | Depends on the selected course | Verify the chosen package and project-award route | No externally assessed project route established |
| Access period | Depends on selected listing | Depends on format and package | Provider lists access after successful completion |
| Award issuer | Course completion separate from ASQ certification | 6Sigma.us award under its own conditions | ExpertRating's own certificate |
| Full cost | Course, exam and other items need separate checks | Chosen format and project support need a current quote | Initial fee and optional later charges listed separately |

ASQ lists the CSSGB exam fee at $483, with $100 off the initial fee for members. A retake is $283. Training and membership cost extra. Source: ASQ Green Belt fees. Checked November 2026.
1. ASQ training
Who it suits: someone targeting a given ASQ exam who wants to compare preparation against the issuer's own body of knowledge. Limit: preparation and professional certification are separate. Completing a course does not show exam entry rules or award the credential.
Start at the credential page. ASQ links to its body of knowledge, references and preparation choices there. For Green Belt, the page lists classroom, virtual and self-paced preparation routes. That gives a useful way to compare the same exam goal across formats.
Read the exact course description instead of treating the training catalogue as one product. Check the stated topics, any assumed knowledge and how practice works. A short revision course for an experienced applicant can differ from a broader methods course for someone learning the subject.
Eligibility comes before exam preparation
ASQ's Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB) requires three years of relevant full-time paid work, with no education waiver. The teaching provider's willingness to accept payment does not resolve that condition. Source: ASQ CSSGB requirements, Checked November 2026.
If you do not yet meet the requirement, you can still study the method. Describe that purpose as learning instead of an immediate ASQ certification route. It avoids planning an exam around experience you do not have.
Compare the chosen listing
For an instructor-led option, check attendance dates and what happens if you miss a session. For self-paced learning, check how long access lasts and whether questions receive a response. Do not assume that a format's flexibility includes unlimited support.
Ask whether the course includes a question bank, reference materials or an exam voucher. If the listing does not say, ask the provider what is included. The ASQ exam fee is not by itself part of tuition simply because the course prepares for that exam.

2. 6Sigma.us training
Who it suits: a learner comparing taught formats and the provider's own assessment or project route. Limit: read the exact package carefully because the provider distinguishes course completion and a live-project award.
6Sigma.us lists classroom, virtual instructor-led and self-paced training. Its Green Belt page describes practical work with process maps, analysis and statistical software. It also says there are no entry requirements for its Green Belt programmes. That is the provider's admission rule, not ASQ's.
The page describes two certificates: one for completing training and another for completing a live project. Elsewhere it describes course participation and a final knowledge assessment. Before choosing, name which award your specific package delivers and what project approval remains afterward.

Delivery and software
A live class can help when you want a scheduled pace and opportunities for questions. A self-paced option can fit around irregular work. Compare the actual teaching and feedback arrangements instead of assuming every format has identical access to an instructor.
The Green Belt page describes statistical software use. Check whether the chosen course includes a licence, a trial or instruction only. Required software can be a separate cost, and access duration may matter if you plan to practise after the course ends.
Project access and mentoring
A live project needs more than a sample spreadsheet. You need an appropriate process, a process owner and permission to use data and test a change. If you do not have that access, ask how the chosen course handles the difference between exercises and its project award.
Check whether mentoring is included, how it is delivered and how long it lasts. Ask who approves a project and what evidence is needed. A statement that projects are supported does not show unlimited coaching or an assessed result in your tuition.
Price and award limits
The payable price depends on format and package. Use the quote for the format and package you choose. Separate the initial teaching price, required software and any later project support or assessment charge.
The provider describes its own Green Belt credential as non-expiring. That is its policy for that award. It is not proof that it is the same as ASQ CSSGB or that every employer treats it as interchangeable.

3. ExpertRating first-course option
Who it suits: a learner seeking a lower-cost introduction to DMAIC and basic process-improvement concepts. Limit: the resulting certificate is ExpertRating's own award. It is not ASQ certification, and the listing does not show an independently assessed live project.
The current course is called Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. Its syllabus follows Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. The page describes self-paced courseware, practical examples and a final multiple-choice exam.
ExpertRating explicitly distinguishes its credential from ASQ and IASSC. Keep that distinction in the plan before considering the course as preparation. Coverage of a method is not the same as verified alignment with another issuer's current exam.

Cost and access
The page lists an initial fee of $99.99 including its courseware and provider exam. It lists $20 for a retake and a $30 renewal option after one year, with an optional hard-copy certificate extra. Source: ExpertRating course fees. Checked November 2026.
The provider describes a typical completion pattern. But actual study time depends on your starting knowledge and schedule. Check the course and exam access conditions separately.
A specific purpose for a first course
You might use introductory study to understand why a team needs a consistent defect definition or how a process map relates to data collection. Those are concrete learning goals. They can help you judge whether to pursue more practice later.
If you apply for project work, describe the skills you practised and any leadership experience separately. If a job asks for ASQ CSSGB, that remains a separate route. If a project needs mentoring or statistical review, verify that support directly instead of assuming that a course certificate provides it.
Six Sigma Green Belt Certification
- Best for
- Low-cost first learning option with ExpertRating’s own certificate; not ASQ certification
- Trade-off
- ExpertRating awards its own certificate; external professional certification has separate issuer requirements.
Factors to consider for your belt and project
Match the syllabus to the task
For a process contributor, basic vocabulary and reliable data collection may matter most. For a project lead, practice with problem definition and appropriate analysis becomes more important. An advanced-sounding title is not a reason to skip the foundation you actually need.
Read the outline topic by topic. Mark each as familiar, needs practice or new. Then check whether the course gives the kind of exercise or feedback the gap requires. A video explanation and an assessed task can serve different learning needs.
Compare practice with a real project
A simulation can teach a technique without access to an employer's records. It should be described as simulated. A live project can add practical evidence but needs a suitable process, permission and a way to verify the work.
For a learner without a workplace project, a course with exercises may be a sensible first step. It does not create a completed live-project record. A learner with project access should check the mentoring and assessment terms before paying for a route that assumes independent work.
Make the schedule credible
Separate teaching dates, self-study workload, exam preparation and project time. They may overlap. But they are not one interchangeable duration. A lifetime access promise tells you about access, not how long every learner needs to become competent.
Ask what happens if your work schedule changes. Check attendance, deferral and refund terms in the chosen listing. A course that fits your current week may still require a practical task or exam at a later fixed time.
Keep the budget complete
List required charges and optional extras separately. Include tuition, exam, books and software when required. A project route may also need time or travel. List any required charge you still need before comparing full totals.
Count bundled items once. An included voucher should not also appear as a second full exam fee. Conversely, preparation described as certification training should not be assumed to include the certification exam.
Compare feedback with the work you will attempt
If your gap is interpreting results, look for exercises that require interpretation and explain errors. If your gap is project scope, look for feedback on a problem statement and measurement plan. A long video library may still leave either gap untouched if there is no relevant practice.
For a employee with a process question but no statistical background, the first useful step may be understanding definitions and basic data quality. For an experienced analyst who needs project coaching, the useful step may be feedback on a real investigation. Both could study Green Belt content while needing very different teaching support.
Ask what happens when your answer is wrong. A worked explanation, instructor response and project mentoring are different services. Record the actual service included in the selected package instead of assuming that support means all of them.
This also makes the access period easier to judge. A learner needs enough time to use the feedback and repeat the task, not merely open every lesson. Compare the terms with the learning work you intend to do.
Check the award and recognition
Write down the full award and issuer before the purchase. Then state what completes it: attendance, course work, exam, project or a combination. Keep that record separate from any external credential you intend to pursue later.
Employer acceptance cannot be inferred from a provider's client logos or a general recognition claim. If a role names a credential, use that requirement. If it asks for practical skills, prepare honest examples of the work and explain what the course actually assessed.

Match the next action to the gap
For introductory learning, the next action can be reading a syllabus and trying a clearly labelled practice task. For an external examination, it can be checking the issuer's outline and entry evidence. For a project route, it can be confirming process access and how the work will be reviewed.
Those actions answer different questions. A learner who needs permission to use workplace records has not solved that issue by gaining more course access. A learner who needs basic terminology has not necessarily benefited from buying advanced project mentoring first.
Use the comparison to name one missing input before choosing the product. Then check whether the selected package gives that input and under what terms. If it does not, keep the gap in the plan instead of treating the certificate as proof that every need has been met.
This gives a first course a useful, limited purpose. It also gives a more substantial route a clearer reason for its extra work and cost, based on the training and support you need.
Questions about training
Six Sigma training and certification can be separate purchases. The Council offers a free self-study guide for its Green Belt route. Its standard award has no project requirement.
Compare that route with the taught choices above if your main need is exam study. Lean Six Sigma training should also match the exact issuer and award you want. A shared belt colour does not prove that course content or exam rules match. Source: Council study and exam route, Checked November 2026.
Does training automatically give me certification?
It can give you the training provider's stated award after its conditions are met. It does not by itself award another issuer's credential. Read the exact certificate, exam and project terms, with professional entry rules checked separately.
Do beginners need Green Belt training?
Not always. A beginner may need a basic introduction or Yellow Belt-level knowledge first. Some providers allow direct Green Belt entry. But that does not settle the learner's practical needs or another issuer's experience rules.
Is project mentoring always included?
No inclusion is assumed here. Check the chosen course and package for the amount of mentoring, access period and assessment. Training exercises alone are not a live project, and a live project is not by itself an externally certified one.
Which route should I choose first?
Define the purpose: introductory learning, a given exam or project-based development. Compare the current official terms against that purpose. Six Sigma training should fill a named gap while keeping the award, issuer and remaining rules clear.
