A project management certificate shows that you finished a course. It may not be a professional award. Google, Calbright and ExpertRating offer courses. PMI issues PMP and CAPM through a separate route. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.
The short answer
Choose Google for a broad online start. Choose Calbright for supported study if you meet its California rules. ExpertRating offers a short course in project skills. Compare the award, access, work required and full cost before choosing. None of these course purchases grants PMP status.
To choose the award, use our guide to project credentials. Then choose the course. You may need skills, required study hours or exam prep. Each is a different task.
Our top 3 picks
1. Google Project Management: self-paced learning with practical assignments.
2. Calbright Project Management: a California public college route with support.
3. ExpertRating Project Management: a short course with its own award.
We used current provider pages and issuer requirements. These aren't results from taking the courses. The comparison gives a reason to choose each route and a reason to look elsewhere.
1. Google Project Management certificate
Google's programme is the clearest fit here for a beginner seeking a broad course with a public curriculum. Coursera delivers the teaching and assessments. The listed course series covers the project life cycle, planning and agile work, with a capstone that brings the skills together.
- Provider and award
- Google; course completion certificate through Coursera.
- Prerequisites
- No prior degree or project experience required.
- Study and delivery
- Online, self-paced; Coursera lists six months at ten hours per week.
- Assessment
- Quizzes, assignments and project work within the programme.
- Cost
- Google lists USD 49 per month after a seven-day trial in the US and Canada. Multiply the actual paid months; verify checkout conditions (Source: Google pricing; Checked November 2026).
- External credential
- PMI CAPM/PMP exams are separate. Course completion doesn't waive PMP experience.
- Best fit and limit
- A guided start with work samples. Self-paced study still requires time for practice and revision.
The main value is learning how the parts of a project fit. A schedule makes little sense without scope. A risk log is weak if it lacks an owner or response. Use the course to connect those records, rather than just collect forms.
Before enrolling, set time aside for the capstone and written work. Don't spend all your time watching lessons. Leave time to use what you learn. Save time for reading feedback and improving a weak first attempt.
Read the Google certificate guide for a closer look. It covers study and billing. It also shows which award you earn.
2. Calbright education programme
Calbright is a California community college. It offers a Project Management certificate. It is an education route. Entry is limited. It isn't free study open to all US readers.
- Provider and award
- Calbright College; Project Management education certificate.
- Admission
- California resident, at least 18, with a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Subject prerequisites
- The programme page lists none. College admission still applies.
- Delivery and time
- Online, flexibly paced, start any time. The page gives differing time estimates; see the limit below.
- Cost
- Tuition and fees currently free to eligible Californians. Personal study time and equipment needs are separate.
- Professional credential
- The college certificate isn't PMI PMP or CAPM. No specific PMI exam entitlement is established here.
- Best fit and limit
- Eligible California adults who want supported study. Readers elsewhere don't meet the stated residency rule.

The page lists an average length of 12 weeks. It also lists 24 to 28 weeks at ten hours a week. Ask the college which schedule applies to your starting point and pace.
This distinction matters if your work or care schedule has a hard limit. An open start date solves the waiting-for-a-cohort problem. It doesn't reduce the number of lessons or tasks you must complete. Flexible pacing can help you fit study around work, but it can also extend the calendar.
If Calbright fits your admission route, ask for a schedule based on the work you will actually do. Match the named courses and their tasks to your available hours. The different time fields shouldn't be blended into an average that the college hasn't supplied.
Compare that plan with a subscription course on the same basis. Include teaching, assessed work and revision in both. Compare each course's weekly workload with your available hours. Ask for the schedule if the provider gives only a broad completion estimate.
The programme describes project reports, plans, meetings and stakeholder work. It also describes student support and work-based learning. Read the terms of each support offer. Don't assume it includes a work placement or a job.
Calbright may suit a reader who wants more contact and support than a short independent course. Its geographic rule is a clear reason to choose another option. Online study doesn't remove that rule. Check it before you apply.
3. ExpertRating foundational course
ExpertRating calls its course Project Management Certification. It has a test and its own award. The name can be confusing: it is ExpertRating's own award. It isn't the Project Management Institute's PMP or CAPM certification.
- Provider and award
- ExpertRating; its own course/test certificate and transcript.
- Entry
- The course page does not list a formal admission prerequisite. Read its entry terms before paying.
- Study estimate
- The provider says two to four weeks at one to two hours a day.
- Assessment and access
- Online provider test after the course; the page states an exam window of one year from purchase.
- Cost components
- Initial course and provider test are $99.99; check the optional printed certificate and retake terms. Source: ExpertRating price. Checked November 2026.
- Professional credential
- Doesn't award PMI PMP or CAPM. Qualifying education or current exam alignment must be confirmed separately.
- Best fit and limit
- A short first course. It doesn't replace experience, a professional exam or a role-specific hiring requirement.

Project Management Certification
- Best for
- Foundational learning and ExpertRating’s own award; not PMI PMP/CAPM
- Trade-off
- ExpertRating’s own award or preparation, not the external professional credential.
Use this option for a narrow need. You may want to learn project terms before a longer course. For that task, a short course may be enough. It is a weak choice if you buy it mainly because its title looks like a professional credential.
If you want to claim study hours with PMI, keep the course records. Save the syllabus, dates, hour total and proof of completion. Confirm what the current issuer rules accept. This guide doesn't treat an ExpertRating course name or the word "certification" as proof of qualifying hours.
Compare its assessment with the skills you want to practise. A provider test can check recall. A job also asks you to handle unclear requests, explain trade-offs and work with other people. Plan a small applied task alongside the course if those skills are your gap.
Factors to consider before enrolling
Start with access and entry. Calbright's residency rule can rule it out before price matters. A short provider course may be easier to enter, but that doesn't make its award equal to a college certificate. Google offers a broad foundation, while its subscription makes study pace part of the cost.
Then compare the work itself:
- Does the syllabus teach the skills in the roles you're considering?
- Do you create a plan, budget, risk record or other work sample?
- Who checks your work, and what feedback can you use?
- Can you fit the required work into the access period?
- What happens if you pause or miss a deadline?
- Does the quoted purchase include an external exam, or only a provider test?
Keep the required and optional costs apart. A retake is conditional. A printed certificate may be optional. An external exam is required only if that separate credential is part of your chosen route. Add the costs for the route you choose, with a separate amount for any extras you may need later.
Compare the costs before you choose a course
Keep required, recurring and optional costs separate. See what is still unknown.

Follow-up emails help you check entry requirements, compare training and choose your next step.
Is there a charge?
The files are free.
How do I get the files?
Links appear after you submit and arrive in your welcome email. Save your copies while the links are valid for seven days.
Can I edit or print them?
Edit the spreadsheet or fill in the printable PDF. Print the PDF in landscape, on US Letter or scaled to A4.
Use the worksheet to record the provider, award, billing period and source of each amount. A missing required charge leaves the total incomplete. You can still compare the known subtotal while you find the missing figure. Do this before committing to a recurring payment.
Course certificates versus PMI credentials
A course certificate shows that you finished that provider's course. A professional award has its own entry rules and exam. You can use both. They remain separate awards.
For example, PMI's CAPM route requires a secondary degree or equivalent, age 18 and 23 hours of project education before the exam. PMP adds documented project leadership, with different routes by qualification. Those rules belong to PMI. Sources: CAPM and PMP. Checked November 2026.
If you meet the PMP entry rules, you may need exam prep. A broad first course may not be the best use of time. If you're new to the field, buying advanced preparation can leave gaps in basic practice. Pick the learning level that matches the task.
Choose a specific programme
Use the Google programme guide when you want to inspect a full beginner curriculum and its billing. Return to the credential comparison if the real question is which award you need. The right next step depends on that distinction.
Before paying, write one sentence: "I need this course to help me do…" Finish it with a task or a named requirement. If the answer is only "get certified," identify the issuer and award first. That short check can prevent buying a course for a job requirement it cannot meet.
Questions about project education
Is Calbright free for readers outside California?
The stated admission route is for California residents. Online delivery doesn't remove that condition. Check the college's current admissions page if your status is unclear.
Is the cheapest course the best route?
Only if it meets the learning need. Compare content, access, support and award before price. An inexpensive certificate with the wrong scope can still waste time.
Do I need a course and an exam?
For a course completion award, follow the provider's rules. For a PMI award, check PMI's entry and exam rules. Verify any included exam voucher in writing.
