Paralegal Pay: National Wages, Locations and Starting-Pay Limits

Fight For 50 · Facts checked November 2026

Paralegal pay should be compared by occupation, place and wage measure. A national median, a local job range and a school's career claim describe different things. Keep the source and reference period beside the number before using it in an education decision. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.

BLS reports $62,890 as the national median annual wage for paralegals and legal assistants in May 2025. The figure includes workers with different experience and employers. It is not a beginner rate, a certificate outcome or take-home pay. For a local decision, compare the same occupation and measure, then read the actual employer's duties and terms.

The short answer

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook is the source for the national and setting figures below. The source was checked in November 2026. The wages refer to May 2025. So the check date must not be mistaken for the wage period.

A median is the midpoint of the covered workers. It is different from the mean, and neither is a promised job offer. Course providers do not determine this occupational wage by issuing certificates.

National occupation pay

The BLS occupation is paralegals and legal assistants, SOC 23-2011. Use the actual duty list when matching a vacancy with it. A legal secretary or a mixed administrative job should not by itself be assigned this series because it is based in a law office.

MeasurePublished amountWhat it describes
Median$62,890Midpoint of covered workers
Lowest tenth boundaryLess than $44,740Lower end of the occupational distribution, not a beginner label
Highest tenth boundaryMore than $101,500Upper end of the distribution, not a promised progression

The distribution contains workers in different settings and locations. Its lower boundary cannot be called the standard first-year rate. Its upper boundary cannot be promised after a certain number of years or a given certificate.

Location and setting differences

For geography, use BLS OEWS tables to choose the relevant state or metropolitan estimate. Keep SOC 23-2011, the measure and the reference year attached. No state or city amount is inferred in this guide.

If BLS has no estimate for your area, check actual local vacancies for advertised ranges. Use a nearby market only if you would consider working there.

The BLS OOH publishes these national industry medians for the same occupation and period:

SettingAnnual median
Federal government, excluding postal service$81,470
Finance and insurance$80,120
Local government, excluding education and hospitals$63,370
Legal services$61,770
State government, excluding education and hospitals$59,320

Source: BLS OOH industry pay table. These are occupation medians within industries, not a ranking of available entry jobs. Different worker and job mixes can contribute to the difference.

A higher industry median does not show that a new applicant can get that pay. Check the actual position, required experience and location. The same principle applies when comparing a large law firm with a small employer: a general label does not reveal the personal offer.

What the figures say about starting pay

The BLS median does not isolate first jobs. Neither does a lower percentile by itself name beginners. The data describes the wage distribution, while an entry application needs evidence about the exact role and employer.

Read current vacancies for the work you intend to do. Record required education, experience and skills, along with hours and any stated range. Keep required and preferred conditions separate. A preferred qualification is not always a mandatory gate. But it can still matter to an employer.

If an advertised range depends on experience, do not assume you will receive its top amount. If no rate is published, ask the employer. A course seller's statement about what graduates can earn does not fill that gap.

A comparison

Imagine two positions with similar titles. One centres on substantive case work under attorney supervision, while the other is largely scheduling and correspondence. Before comparing their pay against BLS, name which occupation best matches each task list.

A second difference could be hours. An annual figure for a full-time role cannot be compared fairly with a part-time offer without understanding the stated work period. Use the actual terms instead of inventing a standard schedule for every vacancy.

These examples are planning cases, not wage estimates. They show why the duty and hours fields matter alongside the headline amount.

Education costs and work expectations

A paralegal salary table cannot tell you whether a programme has ABA approval. The ABA maintains a separate directory of approved education programmes. Check the exact programme there when approval matters to your route.

That is an education check, not evidence of a wage premium. Keep the programme's fees separate from the BLS pay figure. Source: ABA programme directory, Checked November 2026.

The paralegal career guide separates education certificates, professional certification and programme approval. Those distinctions also matter to a budget. A school certificate and a NALA exam are different purchases with separate rules.

List tuition, materials, application or certificate fees and practical attendance costs for the route you can actually enter. If prior education is required and missing, that belongs in the plan. A short post-degree timetable should not erase the cost of the prerequisite.

For a professional award, read the issuer's entry rules before paying for exam preparation. NALA CP has defined education or experience categories. NFPA has separate early-career and advanced routes. A course's own certificate does not by itself award either credential.

Keep known required amounts separate from optional or possible later charges. A complete total needs all the required items. List missing fees beside the subtotal until you can include all required charges.

If a professional award is part of the budget, keep its time conditions separate from salary. NFPA's PACE route can involve a qualifying paralegal bachelor's degree and two years of substantive experience. PCCE offers a qualifying paralegal associate-degree path without experience. Neither condition creates an earnings forecast. Sources: NFPA PCCE brochure and PACE brochure, Checked November 2026.

NFPA lists the PCCE, which leads to CRP, at $300 for members or $325 for non-members. Course tuition is separate. Source: NFPA PCCE fees. Checked November 2026.

Next career steps

Use pay research to decide which work deserves further investigation. Then compare actual entry rules with the evidence you have. A national median cannot show whether your current education meets a given programme or job requirement.

Read the paralegal guide for duties and the routes into education. Choose a programme by award, admission and assessed work. Keep wages as occupation context, apart from the cost of the course you choose.

Compare an actual job offer

The difference between the legal-services median and another industry's median does not measure what one person would gain by changing jobs. The groups can differ in location, duties and experience. A move also depends on an actual vacancy and offer.

Use each amount as context for further research. Then compare the exact role's work, entry conditions and terms. If a provider claims a certificate causes higher pay, look for evidence that separates the credential from those other differences.

For a course budget, keep the known charge and missing amounts visible. A past occupational wage cannot resolve a tuition fee you still need to check or make a required prerequisite disappear. It can inform the wider career comparison without becoming a return forecast.

Keep wage and fee sources separate when you save the comparison. A school's tuition page can establish its own charge. It is not the primary source for an occupational median. Equally, a BLS pay table says nothing about the cost or approval of a given programme. Use the school's own fees and the pay for the work you want when deciding whether to investigate further.

Check whether a saved wage is a mean or a median before comparing it with another figure. The two measures can differ even for the same job market.

Sources and method

This reference uses BLS OOH national and industry annual wage data for SOC 23-2011. The source names OEWS as its wage programme. The reference period is May 2025, Checked November 2026. The OEWS index is the route for further geographic checks.

No salary aggregator, credential-holder survey or provider earnings statement is merged into these tables. No starting wage, hourly conversion or tax estimate is derived. Each value retains its scope and measure.

Paralegal pay can inform a career comparison without promising what one applicant will earn. Read the actual work rules and education conditions before making a training purchase.
