3 ABA-Approved Paralegal Programs Compared in 2026

ABA approved paralegal programs need to be compared at programme level. A school may offer several legal courses. Approval of one does not cover every product with that school's name. Start with the exact award and admission rule, then compare the work and schedule. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.

The short answer

The three choices here are College of the Canyons, UCLA Extension and UC San Diego Extended Studies. Their official programme pages describe ABA-approved paralegal education. They differ in award structure, prior education and delivery.

The ABA directory is the authority for current programme listing. Its search is dynamic. So a rendered page without results should not be mistaken for proof that a named programme is absent. Check the exact entry and the school's current route before enrollment. Sources were checked in November 2026.

Our top 3 picks

  1. 1. College of the Canyons: compare the degree and certificate rules separately.
  2. 2. UCLA Extension: compare graduate-route entry and live daytime or evening study.
  3. 3. UC San Diego Extended Studies: compare intensive and part-time study conditions.

How to check current ABA programme approval

Open the ABA approved-programme directory. Search the institution and programme, then compare the degree type and location with the school page you intend to use. The directory says its listings are updated in February and August.

Keep the school and award exact. An exam-preparation class at the same college can be separate from its approved education programme. An online filter also does not prove that every course is asynchronous. Read the programme's actual attendance rules.

Record the current entry before you pay, including the programme title and award. If you cannot see a result, leave that check open. An empty dynamic page proves neither approval nor rejection. School descriptions provide useful evidence. But the programme identity still needs to match.

1. College of the Canyons

Who it suits: someone comparing a community-college route. They are willing to meet the full degree or certificate conditions. Limit: the paralegal specialty sequence and the complete award rules are different fields.

The current programme page describes two routes. These are an associate degree and Certificate of Achievement. It lists legal specialty study in research, writing and legal technology.

There is also a work-experience component. Read the current catalogue and recommended sequence for the exact award. Do not assume the specialty unit total is the whole degree.

The college describes online and live online delivery. Its page notes a synchronous legal-specialty instruction requirement. A learner may have fixed work hours. If so, check the current class schedule and internship plan. Fully online need not mean there is no fixed attendance.

Cost and schedule

The overview quotes a per-unit amount. But a complete payable total depends on the actual award, resident status and other current fees. Check the college's current fees for your residency and remaining study. It does not multiply specialty units alone and call that a complete degree price.

Check how prior credit is evaluated and which courses must still be taken. A proposed sequence can help you plan. But course availability and the internship can affect the calendar. Confirm those pieces before selecting a finish date.

2. UCLA Extension

Who it suits: a learner who meets the chosen route's prior-education conditions. They need scheduled live online study. Limit: the graduate certificate requires a conferred bachelor's or higher degree. UCLA links to a different undergraduate route for some applicants with other college credit.

The current graduate programme describes two-quarter daytime and four-quarter evening formats. Both are live online, with scheduled class meetings. That is different from a course with no live lectures, even though both can be called online.

The page describes legal research, writing and practical work. It states that its programme is ABA-approved. Check the exact current route and intake. Check the entry rule for the exact UCLA award you want.

Dated cost components

UCLA estimates programme tuition at $7,995 and textbooks and materials at $1,889. It lists the application and candidacy fee as not applicable. Source: UCLA tuition and materials. Checked November 2026. Check the cost for the intake and format you choose.

Keep those components separate in your budget and verify the current intake. Prior education has already been assumed for the graduate route. Its cost and time should not disappear when comparing it with a programme entered from an earlier starting point.

3. UC San Diego Extended Studies

Who it suits: someone who can meet the chosen route's entry and attendance rules. They want to compare an intensive certificate with a part-time option. Limit: the faster route can need a lot of daytime attendance. It may not offer flexible evening study.

UC San Diego describes two formats as ABA-approved. These are its accelerated and part-time paralegal programmes. Its accelerated format uses an intensive one-quarter schedule.

Meetings are live online. Its part-time route has different planning conditions. Read the exact current intake. Do not assume either route is open for an immediate start.

The certificate page and detailed programme page display different cost summaries. No single payable total is selected from those inconsistent summaries here. The chosen current enrollment terms need to show all charges. These include tuition, books and application or certificate charges.

Sources: programme details and certificate listing, Checked November 2026. The inconsistency is a cost-evidence limit, not evidence that the course is free or unavailable.

Fit the format to your week

Read live attendance in the stated time zone. A distant learner can attend online. They may still need to be free during the provider's daytime schedule. Compare that with work and caring commitments before choosing the intensive route.

For part-time study, check the current admission documents and expected course sequence. Check which courses run in the terms you plan to attend. Keep the provider's maximum completion period separate from your planned study time.

Factors to consider before enrolling

Prior education and the actual award

Put the admission rule beside the award. A certificate may assume a degree. In that case, it does not directly replace earning the degree. A college route may need general education credits too. Other credits can also sit beyond the legal specialty courses.

Ask how your prior credit is evaluated. Do not assume it will transfer or reduce the schedule until the programme's own process shows that. The relevant comparison is the remaining work for your actual starting point.

Attendance, practical work and feedback

Online can mean scheduled live meetings, independent modules or a mixture. Check the format course by course where necessary. A nearby programme may still not fit an unpredictable work schedule.

Read how legal research and writing are assessed. Check internship or other practical rules and how they are arranged. A learning exercise, internship and professional exam show different things. This remains true even when all cover legal topics.

Complete cost rather than headline tuition

List tuition and required materials. Add any application or certificate charge. Check whether resident status changes fees. Leave amount you still need to checks on a missing-cost list instead of calling a partial subtotal complete.

No occupation median is used to predict repayment of tuition. BLS pay describes workers in a reference period. Judge what you can afford from your own known costs and resources. Use your current income, savings and confirmed support to decide what you can spend.

Approval, education and professional certification

ABA approval relates to an education programme. It does not make the graduate an ABA-certified professional. It does not provide a personal licence. The school issues its own education award after its rules are met.

NALA issues Certified Paralegal (CP). It sets separate entry and assessment rules. Its paralegal-studies category includes ABA-approved education.

Other defined routes can also fit this category. But the applicant must still meet the full conditions. Source: NALA current eligibility, Checked November 2026.

NALA's standard CP application fee is $325 for members or $375 for non-members. Onsite testing adds $63 for Knowledge and $53 for Skills. Credit card payments carry a 3% service charge. Source: NALA testing fees. Checked November 2026.

Student, military and other testing arrangements have their own rates.

NFPA has distinct early-career and advanced exam routes. Neither is awarded simply by enrollment at one of these schools. Check the professional issuer's current rules if that award is part of your plan.

Use the paralegal career guide to connect these distinctions with the work. The certificate comparison also looks at two other award types. One is a non-approved university certificate. The other is an introductory provider course.

Compare the remaining work, not just the provider name

Two applicants can face different remaining study at the same college. Prior credit, award choice and admission route matter. Ask for the programme's actual evaluation. Do this before subtracting units or assuming a shorter calendar.

Keep the approval check tied to the exact programme throughout that comparison. A different award or delivery route at the institution may need a separate check. The institution's familiar name does not show that every legal course it offers has the same status.

For NFPA, approval and degree type form only part of a route check. One PCCE path uses a qualifying paralegal associate degree without experience. One PACE path uses a qualifying paralegal bachelor's degree. It also requires two years of substantive experience.

Check the selected programme and education conditions. Approval does not grant an award by itself. Sources: NFPA PCCE brochure and PACE brochure, Checked November 2026.

NFPA lists the PCCE, which leads to CRP, at $300 for members or $325 for non-members. Course tuition is separate. Source: NFPA PCCE fees. Checked November 2026.

Check the actual entry point

A graduate certificate and a college degree can both teach legal study. Each can assume different prior education. Put the unmet admission conditions in the comparison. A route may assume a degree you do not hold. Its short teaching calendar is then not your whole route from today.

Use the school's actual award evaluation for prior credit. Calling a programme flexible does not show which courses you can omit. Nor does it show when the remaining courses run.

Questions about approved programmes

Does ABA approval certify me personally?

No. It applies to the education programme. The school issues an education award. A separate issuer grants professional certification under its own rules. Do not describe yourself as ABA-certified solely because your programme is approved.

Are all three programmes available without a degree?

No common admission rule is assumed. UCLA's graduate route requires a conferred bachelor's or higher degree. Other routes need their own current admission and award checks. Compare the programme you can actually enter instead of its shortest advertised calendar.

Does online mean no scheduled attendance?

No. Live online classes take place at stated times, and programmes can require synchronous instruction. Read the current schedule and time zone. A programme can use online delivery and still be unsuitable for your working hours.

How should I choose a programme?

Choose ABA approved paralegal programs by the exact award. Compare entry rules, practical work and schedule. Then compare state and employer rules. Keep professional certification separate from school completion.
