3 Medical Billing and Coding Credentials Compared in 2026
Fight For 50 · Facts checked November 2026
To become a certified medical coder, first choose the credential that fits the work. AAPC CPC, AHIMA CCA and NHA CBCS assess different scopes and use different entry rules. A training provider's certificate is not by itself any of those awards. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.
The short answer
CPC is AAPC's outpatient and physician-services coding credential. CCA is AHIMA's early-career coding credential. CBCS is NHA's billing-and-coding credential. They are separate choices for different kinds of work.
Read the official issuer's entry rules and exam details before choosing preparation. A course can teach useful content while targeting a different exam. This comparison uses current official pages, Checked November 2026.
Our top 3 picks
1. AAPC CPC: outpatient and physician-services coding.
2. AHIMA CCA: early-career coding knowledge.
3. NHA CBCS: combined billing-and-coding scope.
| Credential and issuer | Eligibility or standing | Assessment and ongoing costs |
|---|---|---|
| AAPC CPC | CPC-A applies without completed experience conditions; AAPC sets exam registration terms | Proctored coding exam; membership and continuing education after certification |
| AHIMA CCA | High school diploma required; preparation recommendations separate | AHIMA exam; two-year recertification, education and fee requirements |
| NHA CBCS | Diploma/equivalent plus a current education or supervised-work route | NHA exam; follow NHA renewal and continuing education requirements |

Sources: AAPC CPC, AHIMA CCA and NHA CBCS. No one route is treated as universal employer preference.
NHA lists the CBCS exam application at $134. Study materials are separate unless your chosen package includes them. Source: NHA CBCS exam fee. Checked November 2026.
AHIMA lists the CCA exam at $199 for members or $299 for non-members. CCS is $299 for members or $399 for non-members. These are exam charges, apart from study and books. Source: AHIMA exam fees. Checked November 2026.
AAPC lists the CPC exam at $425 for one attempt or $499 for two attempts. Check membership, books and preparation separately. Source: AAPC CPC fees. Checked November 2026.
1. AAPC CPC coding credential
The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) is issued by AAPC. Its page names outpatient and physician-services coding, including ICD-10-CM, CPT and HCPCS Level II. Choose it for that stated scope instead of assuming it is the same assessment as inpatient coding.
A beginner needs the foundations to read the records and use the rules. AAPC names anatomy, pathophysiology and medical terminology for new CPC students. It treats these differently for those with working knowledge. Course entry requirements and exam registration are different checks.
Experience and apprentice standing
Passing the CPC exam without the required experience can result in CPC-A. The A indicates apprentice standing. AAPC lists routes for removing it. These use records of work, plus qualifying learning or applied experience. A short course does not by itself complete those routes.

Exam and cost context
The current CPC page lists exam pricing starting at $425. That wording is a starting price, not a complete package quote. Check membership, books and exam prep separately. Check attempts and any other selected services too. Source: AAPC CPC fee and training page, Checked November 2026.
AAPC also requires continuing education to maintain the credential. Membership is required too. Read the current rules for the number of credentials you hold. The initial exam purchase is not the full lifetime cost of using the award.

2. AHIMA CCA credential
The issuer is the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Its award is Certified Coding Associate (CCA). Its current page requires a high school diploma. It recommends coding experience or relevant education as exam prep. These are not extra mandatory conditions.
That difference matters. Eligibility does not mean an applicant is ready for the exam. But recommended exam prep is not a universal legal or entry rule. Check whether the issuer requires it or recommends it before ruling the route out. Compare your knowledge with the current exam outline and the work you intend to pursue.
Examination and current books
AHIMA's page describes a computer-based assessment at a Pearson VUE testing centre. It states that the correct current codebooks are required for the scheduled exam. Check the book list for the actual exam date instead of reusing an old course materials list.
The CCA page currently names the 2026 codebook list for exams from May 1, 2026. Source: AHIMA CCA required resources, Checked November 2026. Use current exam instructions. They take precedence over an exam-prep product's older version details.
Fee and renewal
AHIMA lists $199 for members and $299 for non-members for the CCA exam. Retake fees are listed at the same exam amounts. Source: CCA pricing, Checked November 2026. Membership itself and required books are separate cost questions.
CCA has a two-year certification period. Maintenance requires continuing education and a recertification fee. Check the exact current rules before budgeting. The more advanced CCS is a different AHIMA award. CCA does not award it by itself.

3. NHA CBCS billing and coding credential
The issuer is the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Its award is Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS). Its scope includes the billing-and-coding process instead of treating every task as code assignment alone. It can be a different target from a course aimed at CPC.
NHA's education route requires a high school diploma or equivalent. There are stated student provisions. It also requires relevant training finished within the last five years. Its supervised-work route lists one year in the last three years or two years in the last five years. Read the current handbook for the full conditions.

Exam and ongoing requirements
Apply through NHA and select your testing arrangement. The CBCS exam application costs $134; check study materials as separate purchases. Source: NHA CBCS fee. Checked November 2026. A course package may include the exam, but the package terms must say so.
NHA has its own renewal and continuing education process. Use that issuer's current instructions, not AAPC's or AHIMA's rules. A school diploma remains a school award even when the programme includes a CBCS voucher.

Factors to consider for your target role
Medical coder certification is not the name of one universal exam. For medical coding certification focused on physician services, compare CPC's stated scope. For medical billing certification with coding included, compare CBCS's combined tasks.
NHA names both code assignment and submitting claims in its CBCS role description. The right comparison starts with those tasks, then the entry rules. Sources: AAPC CPC scope and NHA CBCS tasks, Checked November 2026.
Begin with duties and setting. Physician-services coding and combined office billing jobs differ. They may ask for different evidence. Read actual vacancies and retain the exact credential wording when one is stated.
Compare formal entry rules with readiness. You can meet a published entry condition while still needing more practice. A provider may recommend experience. That does not always make it a mandatory entry condition. Keep those categories distinct in your notes.
Then compare assessment and continuing obligations. Check each item separately. These include the initial exam fee, membership, codebooks and recertification. Add any missing required charge before comparing totals. No national pay figure shows that the route will repay your spending.
Compare current and continuing charges
NHA's current non-pharmacy renewal page states a two-year period. It requires ten continuing education credits and a $195 renewal fee. Stacked credentials have separate conditions. Source: NHA renewal requirements, Checked November 2026. Do not apply pharmacy-specific conditions to CBCS.
For all three routes, keep the initial exam and continuing costs separate. Membership and recertification fees are different costs. An optional exam-prep product is another separate item. If your chosen package includes an exam, record exactly which award and attempts the voucher covers.
Before paying for a second course, check whether it closes a given gap in the current outline. Overlapping lessons are not another professional award. The evidence you need may instead be records, current books or practical experience.
Keep those differences in the application record as well as the budget. It makes the credential status and remaining work easier to describe accurately.
Professional exams versus course certificates
A school can issue a diploma or course certificate after its own rules. A professional issuer awards CPC, CCA or CBCS after its conditions are met. The course may prepare for one of those exams without awarding it.
ExpertRating offers Medical Coding Certification. It is the provider's own introductory award. It is not AAPC CPC, AHIMA CCA or CCS, or NHA CBCS. The general syllabus does not name the current codebook year. Ask which code sets it covers before using it as exam preparation.
Compare preparation classes
Use the online class comparison for delivery, practice, materials and award inclusions. Return to the billing and coding guide if you are still choosing between the roles.
Keep three milestones separate
Finishing exam prep is one milestone. Permission to test is another. Earning the professional credential is a third.
Record the actual outcome at each stage. A course receipt does not prove you passed the exam. An exam result does not erase a separate experience rule.
Imagine an applicant with a completed coding course and CPC-A. They could list both accurately. Then they could plan the next experience step. Another applicant might have a school diploma and an included CBCS voucher but still need to apply under NHA's rules. Those are valid records without renaming either one as a different award.
The same care applies to ongoing status. Use the issuer's current record and renewal conditions when describing a credential as active. Continuing education, membership and a fee can be separate duties. Do not infer that an initial course package maintains an external award indefinitely.
Choose preparation only after those milestones are clear. It keeps the class purchase connected to the actual exam and evidence needed, with no implied employment result.
Check a new course against the exact credential you intend to pursue. A broader syllabus may be useful learning. But it does not remove the chosen issuer's formal entry and assessment conditions.
Questions about certification
Does a certificate make me a certified medical coder?
A course certificate shows its provider's stated completion. A professional credential has a named issuer and separate conditions. Describe the exact award you hold instead of using a course title to imply CPC, CCA or CBCS.
Is CPC-A the same as full CPC standing?
No. AAPC uses the apprentice designation where the required experience has not been completed. Its removal routes need specified evidence. Read the current issuer instructions. Do not assume any course or practice task removes it.
Must everyone earn CCA before CCS?
AHIMA describes distinct awards and preparation recommendations. Do not turn them into a compulsory universal ladder. Check the scope and current rules of your intended exam. Compare these with your actual knowledge and experience.
How does certification fit a job search?
Employers set rules for duties, experience and location. Professional certification is one form of evidence. Choose the actual credential before comparing preparation courses.
