Bookkeeping certification can mean several different awards. Some routes assess an experienced bookkeeper. Others teach the basics or test one software product. Choose the award first, then compare the learning needed to reach it. A course or certificate does not guarantee a job or higher pay.
The short answer
There is no single certificate that makes all bookkeeping courses equivalent. AIPB awards Certified Bookkeeper (CB). NACPB has its Certified Public Bookkeeper (CPB) route. Intuit offers bookkeeping education and separate recognition routes. ExpertRating offers a first accounting course with its own certificate.
None of those labels means state CPA licensure. A course can teach useful skills without being an independent bookkeeping credential. This comparison uses the owners' published rules, Checked November 2026.
Our top 4 picks
1. AIPB CB: an experience-based bookkeeping credential.
2. NACPB CPB: a route with education, assessment and experience rules.
3. Intuit education: a beginner learning route with separate award choices.
4. ExpertRating Accounting Fundamentals: an introductory accounting course and its own award.
1. AIPB credential route
The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers sets the CB rules. Its route requires a four-part exam and a code of ethics. It also requires relevant experience.
The experience rule is two years of full-time bookkeeping. The other option is 3,000 hours of part-time or freelance work. You can complete it before or after the exam. AIPB's stated time window still applies.

AIPB says its CB programme is not basic bookkeeping instruction for novices. It suits someone who has a foundation in the subject. They want to study the tested skills and meet the full award rules. Passing a preparation course does not remove the experience requirement.
2. NACPB credential route
The National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers sets out a CPB route. It covers courses or accepted equivalents and certifications. It also includes training and supervised experience.
Its current page lists a conduct rule and ongoing education. It also requires one year or 2,080 hours of supervised bookkeeping experience. After you get the award, the listed rule is 24 hours of continuing education each year.

The word license here is NACPB's award wording. It is not a state CPA licence. Check the exact scope and required experience. Read the renewal application too. Do not assume one exam completes the whole route.
3. Intuit bookkeeping education
Coursera offers the Intuit Academy Bookkeeping Professional Certificate. Its four courses teach beginner bookkeeping concepts. It covers the accounting cycle and financial statements. You need spreadsheet access for some activities. The course certificate and an Intuit exam are separate awards.
View at Coursera. The official listing was checked in November 2026. Its title includes Professional Certificate, but that does not turn it into AIPB CB or NACPB CPB.
The Intuit Academy Bookkeeping course on Coursera costs $39 a month in the US and Canada after a seven-day trial. Your total depends on paid months. Source: Intuit's Coursera programme. Checked November 2026. Check Intuit Academy for any separate exam terms.
Intuit also lists its own Academy learning options. Compare the exact programme and platform before paying. Our Intuit bookkeeping guide separates the course, Academy and software-related routes.
4. ExpertRating Accounting Fundamentals introduction
ExpertRating Accounting Fundamentals Certification is an introductory course with ExpertRating's own award. Its published syllabus covers double-entry accounting, journals and financial statements. It also lists bank reconciliation and other basic accounting topics. It is not a bookkeeping aptitude test.
The provider lists courseware and its own exam in the initial fee. It also lists separate retake, renewal and optional hard-copy costs. Source: official course syllabus and terms, Checked November 2026. Check the price of any extra you choose.
ExpertRating lists its Accounting Fundamentals course and provider test at $99.99. This is its own award; any external professional exam is separate. Source: ExpertRating course price. Checked November 2026.
This is a first learning option, not AIPB or NACPB certification. It does not confer CPA licensure or show job readiness. Check the skills gap against the syllabus before choosing it. Keep the external credential rules separate.
Accounting Fundamentals Certification
- Best for
- Introductory accounting learning only after checking the current syllabus; not AIPB/NACPB bookkeeping certification, CPA licensure or a job qualification
- Trade-off
- ExpertRating awards its own certificate; external professional certification has separate issuer requirements.
Factors to consider before choosing
Compare the award and issuer before comparing price. A low course fee and a professional exam fee purchase different things. A package may include an exam. Another route may charge for it separately.
| Route | Experience or entry | Assessment and ongoing requirements |
|---|---|---|
| AIPB CB | Relevant experience required for full award | Four-part exam, ethics and continuing education under AIPB rules |
| NACPB CPB | Education/equivalent, training and supervised experience | Required certifications, conduct, annual renewal and CPE |
| Intuit education | Beginner course; exact exam route separate | Course work and course award; verify any additional exam |
| ExpertRating course | Introductory accounting learning | Provider course and exam; its own renewal terms |

Keep tuition, exam charges and renewal separate. Add every required item before comparing the full cost. Software access may also matter if practical tasks require a given platform.
Practice skills and experience evidence
Use sample transactions to practise record entry and bank reconciliation. Keep the source documents with the exercise so you can explain a difference. A clean answer alone shows little about your process. A sample that shows how you found and fixed an error is more useful.
Practice does not by itself count as an issuer's required work experience. Record real duties and dates honestly. The award may need supervised experience. If so, check who can verify it and what records you need.
Keep an example of the work you practised and the source records used. It helps you explain the skill without turning a course exercise into client experience. Check each issuer's formal experience rule separately from that practice.

Questions about bookkeeping awards
Is a course certificate the same as bookkeeping certification?
No. A course provider can award completion under its own terms. A credential issuer may require separate exams and experience. Read the award's exact name and issuer first. Then decide which route meets your purpose.
Does CPB mean CPA?
No. NACPB issues the Certified Public Bookkeeper award. This differs from state Certified Public Accountant licensure. A bookkeeping course or award does not grant the rights of a licensed CPA. Use the exact bookkeeping award name when applying for work.
Which route fits a beginner?
Start with learning that matches your current skills. Check the professional award rules before choosing exam preparation. AIPB itself distinguishes its CB preparation from basic instruction. A first course can precede a credential without awarding it.
How does a certificate fit a job search?
Bookkeeping certification and training are evidence of specific learning or assessment. Employers and clients set their own rules. Compare the work you want with each route. Check the actual skills and experience it develops.
